Volvo Key Fob Troubleshooting
Volvo drivers appreciate their key fob's convenient remote features. They can lock and unlock their car and start the engine, and even locate it via an app for smartphones.
First, put the fob on a clean surface with the logo facing upwards. Find the button that opens it, wedge a coin between the fob and the cover and then pull it up with care.
Unlocking the Door
Volvo's remote key fobs are able to unlock the doors, tailgate and flap for filling up the fuel in your vehicle with a press of a button. Remote key fobs can also switch on the ignition and activate the alarm. They can even operate the sunroof, when it's equipped. You'll never again have to search for your keys, or be locked out of your vehicle.
If you're using a brand-new Volvo model from our dealership, then you may be unaware of some of its key fob hidden features. You can make use of the lock/unlock option manually if the battery in your key fob fails.
To press the manual lock/unlock button, hold your key fob with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Find the black button that is on the outside of the key fob's body and gently press it to open a cover which conceals the manual key blade. This cover can be flipped counterclockwise by using a flathead or coin.
Beginning the Engine
Modern Volvo key fobs offer the convenience and performance that is not available with manual keys. A key fob, as any other battery-operated device, will lose charge over time. If you've noticed that your key fob has become less responsive to pressing the lock or unlock buttons, that's an indication that it needs a new battery.
You can enable this feature by using the key fob in case your car has a dealer installed Engine Remote Start. The car will then heat or cool to the temperature it was set to when parked. It will continue to run for a maximum of 15 minutes.
Remove the cover that covers the back of the key fob by using your fingernail. Under the cover on a diagonal close to the body's edge, you should find an unidentified button. Remove it by sliding it downwards and to the right. The cover will then come open and slide off leaving the manual key blade inside! If you're still unable to locate the button, you can search the newly exposed manual key access area to see whether there's a secret slot or lever.
Close the Windows
Volvo key fobs have an unnoticed feature that allows you to instantly roll down all windows. This is very useful when you're trying to squeeze into tight parking spaces or simply want fresh air while driving.

You can also use the key fob to turn on your car's panic alarm. It will emit an ominous sound that will draw attention and deter thieves. It will also assist you get home safely in the event that you've been away all night. This feature is handy should you live in a dangerous area, or want to keep your family safe when you are away from home.
Opening the Tailgate
Volvo has loaded its key fobs with a lot of handy features. These are perfect when you're busy with grocery shopping or helping your kids pack their sports equipment after practice.
For example, if you have the Hands-Free Power Liftgate with logo projection and adjustable height (if equipped) you can open it using the key fob. It is possible to open the liftgate by pressing the button, and then close it by pressing the same button.

Turning off the Alarm
Modern key fobs provide a lot of convenience over a standard mechanical car key. However, they aren't able to function completely for a long time, and the batteries eventually fail. You can try to program your key fob at home if you are in a rush or don't have time go to the store.
Choose a clean, flat surface and lay out your key fob, battery, and any other keys. Place the key fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing up and then locate a tiny black button on the bottom left of the fob and slide it downwards and to the right. The cover should fall off and expose the key blade's mechanical mechanism underneath.
The key fob's unlock button twice quickly, and you should be able opening all of the doors and the tailgate. By pressing the lock button for two seconds, you can also close the windows and the sunroof when they're equipped. Connect the battery, and the alarm should stop. If not then the owner's manual must contain a reset process.
